ABSTRACT
The indiscriminate use of topical and systemic antibiotics results in multi- resistant
bacteria to the drugs available, notably those of the genus Staphylococcus sp. In view of this, the search for new active ingredients with antimicrobial action has been shown to be a promising alternative. Caryocar brasiliense, popularly known as pequi, is a plant native to the Brazilian cerrado that has in its composition several metabolites and compounds with recognized medicinal action. Thus, there is a growing research in search of bioactive from this plant. The objective of this work was to isolate and identify bacteria of the genus Staphylococcus sp. of the ocular surface of dogs with ophthalmopathies and to evaluate their susceptibility to the alcoholic extract of the bark and hexanic extract of the pequi pulp. A systematic bibliographic was carried out, seeking to validate its medicina use. Biological material was collected from the ocular surface of 21 dogs presenting ophthalmopathies treated at the ophthalmology service of the Veterinary Hospital of the Federal University of Jataí. Among the isolates, four isolates of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus pseudintermedius (MRSP) were identified and subjected to the action of the plant extracts from serial dilutions Concentrations up to 25% of the pequi pulp extract had no inhibitory effects on bacterial growth. On the other hand, the extract was effective against MRPS isolates, with a minimum inhibitory concentration equivalent to 2.2%. The alcoholic extract of the Caryocar brasiliense is shown as a potential alternative in the control of MRPS bacteria. Studies about its toxicity should be performed in order to determine the applicability of the substance in the treatment of animals with ophthalmopathies.
