ABSTRACT

Equine breeding is constantly expanding, in which the intensification and technification of breeding is increasingly required. The use of reproductive biotechniques as artificial insemination and embryo transfer are expanding to improve the production of these animals. For the realization of these biotechniques, fresh or refrigerated equine sêmen can be used. When transporting with refrigerated semen, diluents are needed to provide protection for sperm, thus conferring greater viability of this semen. Antibiotics are added to the extenders in order to decrease bacterial growth in semen storage until the time of insemination, however, antibiotics must not interfere with seminal quality, or even prevent the establishment of vaginal microflora, which would favor growth of pathogenic microorganisms. As an alternative, we propose AgNp (silver nanoparticles), which can contribute to the preservation of sperm characteristics in addition to preventing the spread of possible pathogens.
