Research line 2: Biotechnologies Applied to Bioscience and Sustainable Animal Production.

Biotechnologies Applied to Bioscience and Sustainable Animal Production.

The field of study in Biotechnologies Applied to Bioscience and Sustainable Animal Production was designed based on the analysis of research carried out by professors linked to the PPGBA. The use of Biotechnology and Molecular Biology tools was evidenced to study bioactive products, techniques applied to reproduction, morphology, physiology, biochemistry, pathology, parasitology, genetics, and epigenetics of interest in Animal Bioscience.

It covers research on natural vegetable or microbial products with biological activity, as well as the possibility of their use in bioscience and animal production.

The proposal of the field included Sustainable Animal Production, in compliance with actions of food alternatives for ruminants and non-ruminants. Actions may also be included to improve, in a sustainable way, animal nutrition (study of forages and nutritional value, for example), animal breeding; production systems (intensive, semi-intensive, extensive) and products of animal origin.

This field of study is supported, in terms of student training, by same core concentration disciplines cited before.

The field of study has the following optional subjects:

  1. Teaching Activity in Animal Health and Production
  2. Basic Animal Morphophysiology
  3. Hospital Practice in Animal Clinic
  4. Hospital Practice in Animal Surgery
  5. Quantitative Methods in Morphological Analysis
  6. Topics in Stress Physiology and Animal Welfare
  7. Use of Animals as Experimental Models for the Study of Metabolic Diseases
  8. Advanced topics in metabolism of teleost fishes
  9. Food Analysis and Evaluation
  10. Advanced topics in reproductive morphophysiology
  11. Clinical and surgical aspects related to equine reproduction.
  12. Integrated nutrition of dairy cattle
  13. Fish Nutrition
  14. Carbohydrate and Lipid Metabolism for Ruminants

The student enrolled in both fields will be able to choose, according to their interest and the supervisor's consent, the optional subjects that best suit their training and qualification. The offer of optional subjects is characterized by flexibility, providing the student with possibilities to compose his study program, in agreement with the professor and the needs for further research.
