ABSTRACT:

LIMA, T.F. “Animal welfare in the production and slaughter of poultry: characterization and analysis of the application of Brazilian, American and European Union legislation". Dissertação apresentada ao Programa de Biociência Animal da Universidade Federal de Goiás, Regional Jataí, como pré- requisito parcial para obtenção do grau de Mestre em Biociência Animal. 2018. Currently, Brazil occupies a prominent position worldwide as a producer and exporter of meat. Faced with this relevant position, a theme of great importance emerges, the Animal welfare. Public and private organizations, as well as non-governmental organizations, are uniting in search of solutions to animal welfare problems, seeking technical and scientific to support the development of measures that minimize the suffering of animals in production processes. In addition, scientists seek to know and relate animal behavior to practices of production and slaughter, in order to facilitate the standardization of international standards. The objective of this study was to conduct a comparative analysis of Brazilian, American and European Union legislation about animal welfare, as well as the evaluation of its practice in Brazil. A survey of the main laws governing the animal welfare was carried out in order to highlight the most striking differences between Brazil, the European Union and the United States of America. Questionnaires were applied to employees of five farms and three slaughter houses, and an active search was carried out in them, in order to know the level of compliance with the standards. In general, it is necessary to standardize the laws, considering the discrepancy between the countries in the international market and the consequent difficulty in their implementation. Workers' perceptions about BEA practice and possible improvements to be made to increase performance in such a matter followed a pattern, indicating that the critical points for the BEA in the production chain are easily identified by those directly involved in the process.
